Action Packed Weekend for Wisbech
It was another packed and eventful weekend for Wisbech Hockey Club, with all ten teams in league action and five matches played at home on Saturday
The Men’s 1s welcomed Peterborough to Wisbech and started the contest on the front foot, showing real intent from the opening whistle. Wisbech created several promising chances early on and earned a succession of short corners, putting the visitors under sustained pressure. Despite the positive start, the home side were unable to convert their opportunities, with the Peterborough defence holding firm and their goalkeeper making key interventions. As the first half progressed, a series of stoppages disrupted Wisbech’s rhythm and allowed Peterborough to regain their composure. Just before half time, the visitors took advantage of a short corner to edge into the lead. The second half followed a similar pattern, with Wisbech pushing forward in search of an equaliser and forcing a number of excellent saves from the Peterborough goalkeeper. Despite the pressure and attacking intent, goals proved elusive, and Peterborough were more clinical, adding two further goals late on to secure a 3–0 victory. Paul Lawrence was named Player of the Match for his tireless effort and influence throughout.

The Ladies 1s were also at home, taking on St Neots in a tightly contested encounter that finished 1–1. Wisbech made excellent use of the ball, with some impressive transfers of play that stretched and tired the St Neots side. There was no shortage of attacking intent, and Wisbech created a number of chances, supported by several well-worked short corners. Despite their dominance, it was St Neots who struck first, scoring against the run of play on the break to take a 1–0 lead. Wisbech refused to let their heads drop and continued to apply pressure, moving the ball well and probing for an opening. Their persistence was finally rewarded with just two minutes remaining when a short corner was calmly finished by Alice Salmon to level the score. It was a deserved equaliser in a strong all-round performance, with Georgie Dunn earning Player of the Match for her composure, skill and control across the pitch.

The Men’s 2s were on the road against a strong St Ives side and came away with a hard-earned draw. It was not the most fluent performance of the season, but one that highlighted how far the team has come in their ability to grind out a result. St Ives, joint fourth in the league, tested Wisbech throughout, and the visitors relied on some outstanding goalkeeping from Kevin Shippey to stay in the contest. Despite moments of frustration, the fight and determination never dropped. Wisbech pushed until the end and were rewarded late on when Sam Markillie found the net to secure the draw. Sam was named Man of the Match for his decisive goal, with Steve Rogers also recognised for a solid defensive display.
The Ladies 2s faced a frustrating afternoon away against local rivals Long Sutton, falling to a 4–1 defeat. Despite the scoreline, there were positive moments, with Jane Peggs scoring Wisbech’s only goal. Freya Matthew’s was named Player of the Match for her relentless work rate and determination in a game that never quite clicked for Wisbech but showed plenty of effort until the final whistle.
One of the standout fixtures of the weekend saw the Men’s 3s and Men’s 4s meet in an intra-club league derby, with both sides needing points for very different reasons. The match began with the 3s firmly on top, pressing high and forcing the 4s deep into their own half. That early dominance paid off with quick goals from Jerome Lawrence and Elliot Peck, setting the tone for a strong opening spell. Further goals followed as the 3s raced into a commanding lead, but after the initial surge they eased off slightly, allowing the 4s to find a foothold. The 4s enjoyed their best spell of the half, and a superb run from Tim Ward, followed by slick passing, created a chance that was calmly finished to make it 3–1. The 3s responded well before half time, scoring from a short corner and adding another soon after to lead 5–1 at the break. The second half was far more even, with end-to-end hockey and chances at both ends. Oli Brown struck first for the 3s, but the 4s continued to push and were rewarded with a well-worked second goal. Despite their efforts, the 3s finished strongly, adding two more goals to seal a 7–2 victory. Jerome Lawrence was named Man of the Match for the 3s, while George Bester stood out for the 4s.
The Ladies 3s travelled to St Ives and produced a determined and increasingly dominant performance to secure a deserved 2–1 victory. The home side struck first in the eighth minute, catching Wisbech on the break as numbers were pushed high. Rather than letting the setback define the game, Wisbech steadily grew into the contest, controlling possession and working together as a unit. Their persistence paid off just before half time when Fiona H-P powered home from a short corner to level the scores. The second half saw Wisbech come out sharper and full of confidence, completing the turnaround in the 45th minute through Elana Freedman after a spell of sustained pressure and excellent build-up play. Wisbech continued to dominate, with Player of the Match Molly Evans causing constant problems down the right-hand side. As St Ives pushed late on, Wisbech defended resolutely, with key saves from Ali Beel and a crucial goal-line clearance from Tegan Eggleton preserving the lead in a gritty and well-earned away win.
The Ladies 4s travelled to Pelicans looking to build on a strong result the previous week but initially struggled to find their rhythm. The first half lacked structure and composure, and the teams went into the break goalless. Captain and Player of the Match Lisa Lowe delivered a strong half-time message, and Wisbech responded with a much-improved second half. Defensive discipline improved, and as the pressure built, Annabelle McGregor opened the scoring with seven minutes remaining. Shortly after, another short corner routine saw Annabelle strike again to make it 2–0. Pelicans pulled one back late on, but Wisbech held firm to secure a deserved 2–1 victory.
Ladies 4’s continue their winning streak of 2026
The Men’s 5s battled out a hard-fought goalless draw against Ely, with both teams producing moments of quality but neither able to find the breakthrough in a competitive and evenly matched contest.
The Ladies 5s also faced Ely in a game of two halves, eventually losing 3–1. After conceding three goals in the first half, Wisbech regrouped and dominated much of the second period. Their pressure was finally rewarded when Petra Crossley-King finished after a rebound. Libby Clark was named Player of the Match for her passing and work rate.

On Sunday, the mixed team rounded off the weekend at home against Shefford & Sandy. A fast start from the visitors saw them score twice early on, but Wisbech responded with resilience and quality. Goals from Jason Mallett brought the scores level, and despite chances at both ends, Wisbech could take pride in a strong all-round performance. Georgie Dunn was named Player of the Match in a display full of composure and leadership.
