Dominant Display from Men’s 1s

It was a busy weekend for Wisbech with fixtures across Saturday and Sunday as the club heads into the final few weeks of the season, and there were plenty of goals, drama and big performances throughout the sides.

The Men’s 1s set the tone on Saturday with a high-intensity 4–2 victory over Cambs Uni 3s. Flying out of the blocks, Wisbech pressed aggressively from the first whistle, with Jason Mallett forcing an early save before Jonny Garner reacted quickest to a loose ball in the D to open the scoring. Cambs responded, but a perfectly weighted pass from Belding sent Mallett through to fire home a reverse strike, and after another goalmouth scramble he slapped in his second to restore the lead. Cambs pulled one back before the break, with Wisbech briefly down to ten following a green card for Trundle, making it 3–2 at half-time. The second half showed maturity and control, even during the closing seconds of the card. Jamie’s superb skill and vision set up Mallett for his hat-trick to make it 4–2, and from there Wisbech managed the tempo intelligently. Stannard slotted seamlessly into a back four, while Player of the Match Josh Bell produced a defensive masterclass with countless crucial tackles to secure a composed and deserved win that keeps the 1s firmly in the top half.

The Ladies 1s were involved in a seven-goal thriller but were left heartbroken in a narrow 4–3 defeat to Norwich City 1s. After Norwich opened the scoring, Lilian deflected home to level matters, and although Norwich edged ahead again, Wisbech remained composed. Hannah equalised early in the second half with a superb touch, and Nat expertly converted a short corner to make it 3–3 after Norwich had again taken the lead. With momentum building and possession controlled well in the closing stages, Wisbech looked the more likely winners, but a late Norwich strike with just a minute remaining snatched the points despite a spirited and positive display.

The Men’s 2s endured a difficult first half, conceding four early goals to trail 4–0 at the break. A much-improved second-half performance saw them apply real pressure and claw three goals back, but the damage had been done as the game ended 5–3. Jack Woollard earned Man of the Match, and with three fixtures remaining the focus now shifts to regrouping strongly to finish the season on a positive note.

The Ladies 2s travelled to Cambridge and started brightly, taking the lead through a well-struck short corner from Lou Sandall, while Kirsty Harrison produced a string of excellent saves. Cambs Uni levelled before half-time and then edged ahead after the break, but another clever short-corner routine from Lou, slipped left to Lily Cooper, brought Wisbech level at 2–2. A huge final effort saw Swampy lead resolute defending, but the hosts found a late goal to secure a 3–2 result.

The Men’s 3s faced City of Peterborough 6s and, despite creating chances, trailed 3–0 at half-time. With a bare eleven and fatigue setting in, they showed resilience in the second half. A cross from Ciaran Lowe deflected kindly for Jerome Lawrence to volley home and reduce the deficit, but Peterborough added a fourth to win 4–1. Jerome shared Man of the Match honours with Nidge Lowe for their tireless efforts.

The Ladies 3s delivered one of the standout performances of the weekend with an emphatic 8–2 win away at Huntingdon & Northstowe. Dominant from the outset, they built a 4–1 half-time lead and never looked back. Braces from Fiona H-P, Becky Allen and Laynie Thompson highlighted their attacking depth, while Elana Freedman and Charlotte Holt also found the net in a ruthless display that leaves them sitting third with three games remaining and real momentum behind them.

The Men’s 4s earned a hard-fought 1–1 home draw against Spalding in a strong all-round team performance. Finley Morby-Jones was lively throughout and scored Wisbech’s goal, while goalkeeper Rhys Archard produced a series of excellent saves. Ryan Boler’s tireless work rate earned him Player of the Match in a positive result.

The Ladies 4s produced a thrilling 4–3 comeback victory over Newmarket 3s Development. After conceding early, Sian Spear fired home her first club goal to level, but Newmarket led 2–1 at the break. Annabelle McGregor equalised early in the second half only for the visitors to respond immediately. Bailey Hanrahan then surged forward to make it 3–3 before a tense finale saw Tina Forder clear one off the line and Annabelle McGregor strike again to seal a dramatic win. Sian Spear’s driving runs and influence earned her Player of the Match as the 4s head into their final three games full of confidence.

Ladies 4s

The Men’s 5s battled hard in a 2–0 defeat to Bourne Deeping, with Alex Parker and Chris Mullins producing outstanding goal-line saves and Charlie Lovell impressing on his attacking debut. Mullins was named Man of the Match.

Men’s 5s

On Sunday, the men’s 5s were back in action at home in a rearranged fixture against Kettering and delivered a disciplined performance to secure a well-earned 0–0 draw, with George Bester controlling midfield and Guy Hayes making dangerous runs down the wing. Man of the match went to Tom Jupp, who despite normally playing out on pitch, played as the teams goalkeeper and denied all Kettering’s attempt to hit the backboard.

Mens 5’s

The Men’s O35s entertained Norwich City in a fast-paced cup encounter and came out on top in a 5–4 thriller to book their place in the quarter-finals. Luke Jackson opened the scoring before Norwich levelled, but Dan Martell struck twice and Charlie Bester added another to give Wisbech the edge at half-time. Dominic Stannard extended the lead in the second half, and despite Norwich narrowing the scoreline, goalkeeper Rob McGregor’s numerous saves ensured progress in a game where the margin flattered the visitors.

The Ladies O35s travelled to regional rivals Norwich Dragons in their cup fixture, with the usual mix of tape, teamwork and determination on show. After earlier wins against Newark and Southwell Brincliffe, this was a sterner test. A well-worked short corner saw Swampy feed Fi, with Georgie Dunn reacting quickest to the rebound to give Wisbech the lead. Norwich equalised during a strong spell of pressure, and despite relentless work rate, disciplined defending and further chances — including a chaotic goalmouth scramble that somehow stayed out — Norwich edged ahead in the 60th minute. Wisbech pushed hard for an equaliser but fell to a narrow 2–1 defeat, exiting the competition with heads held high after a committed and positive campaign.
